something that already had a story—the piano.
With a few thoughtful changes, affordable finds,
and meaningful details, it became a warm, inviting
space where music feels right at home.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PIANO ROOM
This piano has been part of our family for many years. My oldest son began taking piano lessons in third grade, and we purchased this used baby grand from a local piano store. Over the years, I had the privilege of watching his talent grow, eventually studying under a world-renowned pianist from Bulgaria, and taking his music to an entirely new level.
One of the hardest adjustments when he left for college, was realizing how quiet the house had become. The music I had grown so accustomed to hearing was suddenly gone.
When I first toured this home, I immediately knew this little nook—originally intended for a dining table—had another purpose. I could already picture his piano there.
Because the piano is black, I kept the surrounding space warm and light, using thoughtful accents to complement it without making the room feel dark, but more than anything, I wanted to create a place where the piano felt as though it belonged.
Now, when my son comes home—especially during the holidays—and beautiful music once again fills the house, this little corner becomes one of my favorite places to be.
Music can speak when words simply can’t,
and having it fill our home again is incredibly special.

WHERE I CHOSE TO SPLURGE

Years ago, when my kids were little, I would pick up a gallon of paint for $20-$30 and happily change a room whenever the mood struck. This time, I approached it differently.
I knew I wanted a color and finish I could live with for years, so this was one place I chose to spend a little more for quality and longevity. Agreeable Gray was regularly $101.49 per gallon, but I waited for a sale and purchased it for about $60 per gallon.
